I admit to silently praying that you wouldn’t pick up.
Willingly.
For godsakes, I can’t believe you asked for more.
It started out smooth with the family questions.
The questions we weren’t interested in, but we had to ask because it’s our family.
Those went by quickly.
Within 10 minutes.
And then we went down memory lane.
And how much fun we had on the beach.
Making pictures in the sand.
Sitting, talking, playing with little crabs.
And after much flirting,
Innocent on my part, no so innocent on your part,
It was time to say goodbye.
I say my goodnight in one breath, and wait for yours.
“Goodnight, virgin cherry…
Call me tomorrow, got it?
Love you, bye.”
I hang up in a snap.
My heart thudded in my chest and I could feel the energy drain from my body.
My knees give in and I fall down, my face to the floor.
And as I lie with my face in my carpet and my heartbeat in my ears, I think….
…. My lord, what have I gotten myself into?
